The much-anticipated release of Android 4.3 has been announced. And, as we suggested could be the case, it is being labelled as another Jelly Bean, as opposed to Key Lime Pie – we are up to Jelly Bean III now, following Android 4.1 and 4.2…

Anyhoo, headline features include Bluetooth Smart support, restricted profiles for tablets, support for accelerated 3D graphics, telephone number auto-completion, faster user switching, simplification of the Setup wizard, support for “surround sound” (via Fraunhofer Cingo) and additional language support.

I guess the two main ones are restricted profiles and support for the radio communications protocol once known as Bluetooth Low-Power, and once known as Wibree, before that…

In Android 4.3, we’re introducing restricted profiles (pictured below), which let you manage per-user access to apps and content. Restricted profiles can be used in any number of situations. For example, restricted profiles enable parental controls, so certain family members are prevented from accessing mature content. Alternately, retail stores can use tablets as kiosks that show product information, or shops can use tablets as point of sale systems, all while limiting access to apps.

For Bluetooth Smart support:

Fitness sensors and other devices that use Bluetooth Smart technology open the door for a whole new class of mobile applications. Bluetooth Smart minimizes power usage while measuring and transmitting data, making both sensors and the phones or tablets connected to them more battery-efficient. With Android 4.3, Nexus 4 can now connect to Bluetooth Smart sensors. Runtastic and many other developers are making Android apps compatible with these sensors.

CSR has been quick to highlight this feature of Android.

“Android 4.3 natively supporting Bluetooth 4.0, including low-energy Bluetooth Smart, is a huge opportunity for developers given the dominance of Android in the smartphone market,” said Paul Williamson, Director of Low Power Wireless at the company.

“With all major operating systems supporting Bluetooth Smart it will allow them the flexibility to develop appcessories for all operating systems and bring them to market quickly. This is because with Bluetooth Smart there is a single profile that can be used to communicate with any accessory. The accessory has attributes that can be read, written, or notified like a database that can be defined by the developer. The intelligence lives in the app and not the operating system, so a new appcessory can be developed and launched as fast as an application. The only limitation for developers is their imagination.”
