Market Research Samsung and Apply to dominate OEM chip spend

“After a flat year in 2012, global purchasing of semiconductors by the world’s top electronic brands is set to return to growth in 2013, as Apple and Samsung contend to claim the title of biggest spender.”

So says market analysis firm IHS.

Its findings, according to a Semiconductor Spend Analysis Market Tracker Report, are that the total available market for semiconductor spending by major OEMs in 2013 will rise to $265.2bn this year, up 4.2% from 2012.

Spending by year-end will be at its highest level in six years, with expenditures in 2014 forecast to make another modest jump to $279.4 billion.

The figures cover OEMs with annual revenue of $1bn or more – representing around 83% of the total semiconductor market ($318.8bn), said IHS.

“If internal chip consumption within companies is excluded, the served available market for semiconductor spending will equate to an amount slightly lower than the total available market at $241.3 billion in 2013,” said the firm.

IHS predicted in 2012, that Apple will lead OEM served available market in 2013. “However, when also accounting for consumption of internally produced chips, Samsung will take the lead in terms of total available market this year,” it added.
