Business New foundry model needed, says Manocha.

GloFo boss Ajit Manocha reckons the mobile industry will be double the size of the PC industry in 2016.

This is a far faster transition than anyone has forecast so far. Manocha was speaking at Semicon West.

The mobile business drives new priorities like power, performance and features, higher data rates, high resolution multicore processors and thinner form factors, he said.

Manocha listed Five Big Challenges: wafer cost, device architectures, lithography and EUV, packaging and the 450mm wafer transition.

With fab cost increasing at 40% a year, a new model for the foundry-customer relationship needs to be established, said Manocha.

This new relationship should be based on close collaboration rather than simply wafer cost, he said.
